Lacquer with mother-of-pearl inlaid was used by the Chinese people since the Shang dynasty (1600-1100 BCE). However, very few pieces of Chinese mother-of-pearl earlier than the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) had survived. This collections includes over 80 objects made of sea shells or lacquered objects with mother-of-pearl inlaid, dated from the Neolithic period through the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
